Who’s In Your Camarilla?

Have you ever been stuck in an elevator with people? Every time, upon entering the almost amusement ride like people mover, I sneakily and quickly size up every one around me. Internally, I try to guess by looking at the person how they would react if the elevator broke down. In my small mind I carry a large list of characteristics that I would hope each person would possess, should I ever get stuck in an elevator, storm shelter, burning building or a place where an active shooter is unloading on us. Of course handpicking these folks would be ideal, but I understand realistically in these situations, I would have no choice.

I feel pretty certain that if I was stuck in an elevator; #1. I know without a doubt I’d be the first one to have to pee; #2. I’d be the one who slaps the first hysterical, out of control person in the face; #3. I’d be the one praying out loud and singing a hymn and hugging the person I slapped, and anyone else needing comfort. I’m pretty sure we’d all be dead cuz I’d use up everybody’s oxygen talking and praying.
In our everyday lives, realistically we have a choice when it comes to who we select as our Camarilla; {Kam-uh-ril-uh; Spanish Kah-mah-ree-lyah, -ree-yah} a group of unofficial or private advisers to a person of authority, especially a group much given to intriques and secret plots; cabal; clique. Noun; group of close friends, associates. In my case I can hopefully, be whatever is needed in case of emergency but this doesn’t guarantee the person in authority will choose me. I also hope that when needed I can be the person in authority.

You and I are in charge of our own character. We also have the choice to choose whom we want to “do life with.” Are we ever perfect?…no. Are the people we choose ever perfect?….no. But the choice is ours. When we are in an emergency situation time is limited and we may have to be in a rush. In daily life there is no rush or threat. We also choose the time frames in which we get to know someone before we choose them as a potential friend, associate or spouse.

Being intentional with your people choice can improve your life.

For instance, I recently started choosing to exercise, starting out with riding my bike 30 mins everyday. I purposely asked a young lady attending one of my study classes to be my exercise accountability person. She was not like others who tried to get me on their workout regiment. Instead she listened to my health limitations and encouraged me to ride my bike. I saw within her a drive, a passion, and determination for better health, not just for herself but for those around her. She also possesses the authority gene without the drill sergeant approach which is just what I need. She has sincerity and morals so I know she will not discuss my goals and frustrations with anyone else. Is she perfect…no and neither am I. Are we like minded in our faith….yes and we are also taking our health more seriously. Through me, she will reach another as I will share this support with the next one in need.

Think about it….Who’s in Your Camarilla? (what’s in your wallet…hahaha sorry couldn’t help myself) Would you want to be with them when the elevator breaks down?

I hope you’ll join me…..as we take our time and be intentional with choosing friends, associates, acquaintances or spouses. May we ultimately choose those of good character, not expecting perfection but those obtaining qualities that will complement our own, leading us to form a strong circle around us and with us. Also, may we not feel that we are an island and need no one or worse yet, feel that no one needs us.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? …

Lord, I know that you daily put those in my path of your choosing….with the desire that I too will choose them for my Camarilla. I will keep my eyes and heart on you and the things of your kingdom, not of this earth. In Jesus name Amen.
