Christmas Music

“Everybody knows, some turkey and some mistletoe help to make the season bright”
“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas with every Christmas card I write”
“Silent night, Holy Night”

After Thanksgiving (shhh and on occasion during the summer) my radio station is fixed on the one that plays non-stop Christmas music! My CD player is loaded with all the old and new artists renditions of Christmas. The decoration of the tree and house do not happen unless the Christmas tunes are cranked! After all….it’s all about that bass!!

My earliest memories of Christmas involve a Hi-Fi record player and radio nestled inside a wooden cabinet, stocked with thick 78 records.

The precious children’s programs as well as getting a group of wassailer’s/caroler’s together  is always at the top of every civic organization and church’s list of “must do’s” for Christmas. Practices are scheduled and music sheets copied, someone dresses in a Santa costume and it’s all fun and cheery. Until the temps hit the single digits and the winds blow. Or the hard of hearing elderly couple, who’s house you’re outside of, calls the police reporting some crazy people on their lawn.

Christmas songs originated with statements of theological doctrine and were used in celebration of worship. A few of the songs we sing today weren’t actually meant to be Christmas songs.

Music and singing lift the spirit, and tame the savage beast, or can charm snakes. Lyrics and melodies inspire, encourage, challenge…..and are often used by retailers to encourage shoppers to buy and spend!
Music and lyrics can play on one’s emotions. Certain songs, especially at Christmas can bring us to tears, longing for our deceased loved ones and those far away. Songs can also create within us a longing for the past.
Other songs make us want to shake our booty and rock around the Christmas tree! Music can also create an emotion within us to dream. The dreaming can inspire us  into creating the perfect dreamy atmosphere. We see slightly unrealistically. A fire, twinkling lights, hot buttered rum and some smootching, while listening to THE CHRISTMAS SONG by Nat King Cole. But that inspiration can quickly burn out, when one spouse works overtime to pay for all the Christmas “stuff” and the other is left alone by the fire.  But the music plays on………….is it the music that puts the crazy in your Christmas?
